Since Iran has been in the news, I have decided to publish sections of To Run the World that touch on Soviet relations with Iran. The book itself, now in paperback, is purchasable from here: https://www.amazon.com/Run-World-Kremlins-Global-Power/dp/1108477356.

There is actually a lot in the book about Iran, but the bits I thought are worth extracting deal with the 1979 Iranian revolution and its aftermath, when the Soviet leaders sought to ingratiate themselves with the Khomeini regime at the U.S. expense. These efforts failed, but only because the Kremlin invaded Afghanistan. Otherwise, Khomeini was willing to deal.
